YouTube May Have To Ban People From Uploading Videos Due To New EU Rule.\u00a0 YouTube has said that new EU copyright rules may mean it has to start banning people from uploading their own videos \u2013 in turn potentially \u2018drastically\u2019 changing the internet we know today.<\/p>\n
The EU\u2019s new copyright directive, which is known as Article 13, will see platforms like YouTube forced to scan through content in order to ensure nothing includes anything copyrighted.<\/p>\n
The same legislation has also been dubbed the \u2018meme ban\u2018, as it also means other websites\u00a0could be made to filter out text, audio, photos, and video \u2013 all, of course, fundamental elements to the meme culture we love.<\/p>\n
YouTube CEO\u00a0Suasn\u00a0Wojcicki has spoken out about the ban, calling on creators to openly voice their\u00a0opinons\u00a0and rally against the proposed rules.<\/p>\n
In a blog post, she wrote:\u00a0\u201cArticle 13 as written threatens to shut down the ability of millions of people \u2013 from creators like you to everyday users \u2013 to upload content to platforms like\u00a0YouTube.\u201d<\/p>\n
Urging YouTubers to use the hashtag #SaveYourInternet,\u00a0Wojcicki\u00a0argued that the legislation threatens to \u2018block\u00a0users in the EU from viewing content that is already live on the channels of creators everywhere. That\u00a0includes\u00a0educational content like language classes, physics tutorials, and other how-to videos.<\/p>\n
Wojcicki\u00a0also said that it could threaten \u2018hundreds of thousands of\u00a0jobs\u2019, referring to everyone from\u00a0EU-based content creators through to businesses and artists.<\/p>\n
She continued: \u201cThe proposal could force platforms, like YouTube, to allow only content from a small number of large companies. It would be too risky for platforms to host content from smaller original content creators, because the platforms would now be directly liable for that content.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe realise the importance of all rights holders being\u00a0fairly compensated, which is why we built Content ID, and a platform to pay out all types of content owners. But the unintended consequences of article 13 will put this ecosystem at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n
Wojcicki\u00a0added: \u201cWe are committed to working with the industry to find a better way. This language could be finalized by the end of the year, so it\u2019s important to speak up now.\u201d<\/p>\n
The\u00a0Save Your Internet\u00a0campaign is calling for people to email, ring, or tweet their MEP and provide\u00a0a draft message to send.<\/p>\n
